Simmons Narrowly Misses School Record on Day One of Outdoor Season Opener

LAFAYETTE, La. - Freshman Kerri Simmons finished just .75 inches shy of a school record as the Nicholls State University shot putter launched a throw of 13.55 m (44 ft. 5.5 in.), recording the second best mark in the history of the program on day one of the Louisiana Classics on Friday night in Lafayette.

Simmons toss finished just 0.75 inches shy of Crystal Guillory's school record mark of 44 feet 6.25 in. set in 1996.

Simmons, the only Colonel to compete on Friday night, gave Nicholls a strong showing in its first meet of the outdoor season, finishing fifth.  The rest of the Colonel track and field team will open the outdoor season on Saturday in the second and final day of the 2011 Louisiana Classics.
