NORMAN, Okla. - The Nicholls State University women's track and field team took home the first event title in program history at the conference indoor championships as the Colonels took home the top spot in the women's distance medley relay at the 2011 Southland Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships on Friday night in Norman, Okla.

The Colonels racked up 17 points on the opening day of the meet, the fifth best total of the day.  Leading the way was the Colonel quartet of Jessica McLeod, Samantha Calhoun, Jackie White and Kadi Whisnant, who clocked in at 12:04.86, recording a new school record in the event for the second time this season and edging out a second place Texas-Arlington squad that finished 12:05.47.  The DMR win was the first conference title in school history at the league indoor meet and gave the Colonels ten points in the league standings.

The Colonels also got points from senior high jumper Chelsea Dockrey, who finished seventh by clearing 1.60 m and senior distance runner Lauren Jones, who clocked in with a time of 17:37.88 to take fourth place in the 5K.

Nicholls will look for even more over the next two days as Whisnant advanced to the finals of the mile and Calhoun advanced to the finals of the 60 m dash with the second fastest time in the prelims on the day.

The Colonels will return to action on day two of the conference championship meet on Saturday.
