HOUSTON, Texas -
The Colonel distance crew led the way for the second consecutive day as the Nicholls State University women's track and field program wrapped up the second and final day of the Houston Indoor Invitational with a pair of near-record breaking showings from their senior distance runners.

After opening the Houston Indoor Invitational with a school record in the distance medley relay on Friday, senior distance runners Kadi Whisnant and Lauren Jones shone brightest for the Colonels on day two.  Whisnant, who ran the final leg of the Colonels' school record DMR team on Friday, returned on Saturday to tie her own school record in the indoor mile.  The Baton Rouge and St. Michael the Archangel High School product turned in a time of 5:05.18 in the mile, tying the school record she set at the 2010 Southland Conference Indoor Championships in Norman, Okla. last season.

Jones backed up her teammate with a strong showing in the 3,000 m.  Jones clocked in at 10:14.48, the second best time in school history.  The Centerville, Iowa native finished one second ahead of the school record coming into this season, but Whisnant still owns the all-time mark after opening the year with a record-breaking time of 10:09.20 at the Arkansas State Kickoff Klassic in December.

In the power events, the Colonels were led by junior sprinter Samantha Calhoun.  The Morgan City, La. native finished just shy of her own school record in the 60 m dash.  Calhoun advanced to the finals of a deep sprint group by posting a time of 7.60 in the 60, just 0:00.03 off her school record set at the Kickoff Klassic last month.
