Colonels Set Three School Records in Season Opening Meet

2010-11 ASU Kickoff Klassic Results

JONESBORO, Ark. -
The Nicholls State University women's track and field team set three school records and recorded nine marks that meet the 2011 Southland Conference Indoor Championships qualifying standard as the Colonels' first trip to the track for the indoor season proved to be a major success for the Nicholls program at the 2010 ASU Kickoff Klassic in Jonesboro, Ark. on Saturday.

The Colonels were led by junior sprinter Samantha Calhoun who made her 2010-11 debut a memorable run.  The Morgan City, La. native set new school records in the 60 m and 200 m.  Calhoun clocked in with a time of 7.05 seconds in the prelims, the fastest of any runner in the field, of the 55 m dash before taking fourth with a 7.12 showing in the finals.  Adjusted to an official 60 m time, Calhoun's 7.05 time in the prelims comes out to 7.57, 0.03 seconds faster than her school record of 7.60 which came at the conference championship meet last season.

Calhoun recorded her second school record of the day with a 25.09 showing in the 200 m dash, bettering her previous record of 25.12 set at last year's Houston Indoor Invitational.

Senior distance runner Kadi Whisnant then led the Colonel distance crew by setting a new program standard in the 3K.  The Baton Rouge native finished second with a 10:12.20, bettering the previous school record by three seconds.  Whisnant was joined by classmate Lauren Jones and freshman Emily Charlesworth in giving Nicholls three finishers in the top ten, all of whom qualified for the Southland Conference Championships 3K race on the first day of competition.

Other Colonels meeting conference qualifying standards on day one of the 2010-11 season were Katrina Bettard in the 60 m, freshman mid-distance runner Jackie White in the 800 m, senior distance runner and ASU Kickoff Klassic 1 Mile Run champion Jessica McLeod, and Kerri Simmons in the shot put.

The Colonels will now break for finals and the holiday weekend before returning to action at the Leonard Hilton Invitational in January.
