Seniors Kadi Whisnant and Lauren Jones took first and second, respectively and the Colonel women cross country team placed three runners in the top six as the Nicholls State University women's cross country program narrowly missed out on a first-place team finish to Southern Miss at the Gulf Coast Stampede hosted by the University of West Florida on Saturday morning.

The Colonels totaled 35 team points to the Golden Eagles 30.  Whisnant led the way with her first championship of the season.  The Baton Rouge native turned in a personal best 5K cross country time of 18:23.80, which ranks as the third fastest time in school history.

Jones was hot on her heels in second place, covering the Escambia County Equestrian Center course in 18:28.50 to take second.  Senior Jessica McLeod added to the Colonel cause with a sixth-place time of 19:05.70, freshman Emily Charlesworth gave Nicholls its fourth top-ten finisher of the day with a ninth-place time of 19:21.20, and freshman Jackie White finished 17th with a time of 20:01.60.

However, the Southern Miss Golden Eagles boasted five top-ten finishers to edge Nicholls for the team championship 30 to 35.

On the men's side, Nicholls was led by freshman Blaine Gisclair who was the Colonels' low finisher for the second straight meet.  Gisclair's time of 28:45 finished 17th overall.  Justin Babin finished 24th with a 29:36 showing and Casey Keiser added a third top-30 finish for Nicholls with a time of 29:43 to place 26th.
