EUGENE, Ore. - Nicholls State University senior javelin thrower Leslie Bourgeois will become the first Colonel student athlete in any sport to compete in consecutive national championships when she takes the runway at storied Hayward Field at the University of Oregon on Saturday for the 2010 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field National Championship Finals.

Bourgeois, a four time NCAA postseason qualifier and three-time Southland Conference champion in the javelin, qualified for the national championship finals after a fourth place showing at the NCAA National Championship East Preliminaries in Greensboro, N.C. on May 27.

The Raceland native and Central Lafourche High School product will look to improve upon her 22nd place finish at the 2009 NCAA National Championships. Despite holding the 33rd best throw in the nation this year, Bourgeois heads into her second consecutive NCAA Finals ranked No. 17 in the nation by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association poll.

In order to become the first Nicholls student-athlete in school history to earn All-American honors at the national meet, Bourgeois will have to finish in the top eight or finish among the top eight American-born athletes, but Bourgeois has shown the ability to step up at the right times. Last season, Bourgeois was owned the eighth best throw in the East Region before claiming fourth at the NCAA East Prelims in Greensboro.
