McNeese's Sam Vidrine places 6th in javelin at NCAA championship meet

EUGENE, OR - McNeese State's Sam Vidrine finished sixth in the javelin at the NCAA championship track and field meet here Thursday.

The Cowboy sophomore went a career best 229-7 on his second throw of the day to claim his place and an all-America honor.

"It was a fantastic job," Cowboy head coach Brendon Gilroy said about Vidrine's performance. "He was competing with his shoulder not 100 percent and he didn't get in much practice time the past week.  But, he just went out and got off one of the best throws in McNeese history."

Vidrine's throw is actually the second best in school history,  trailing only the 237-4 effort made by Chris Hill when he had a top five finish at the NCAA championship meet in 2007.

A sophomore out of Mamou in his first year of collegiate competition, Vidrine was the 2010 Southland Conference champion.

Ben Chretien, McNeese's other entry in the event, placed 20th in the meet with a best throw of 207-2.

The winner of the event was Craig Kinsley of Brown with a throw of 250-3.
