ARLINGTON, Texas - The Nicholls State University women's track and field team concluded the 2010 Southland Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships in record fashion on Sunday as the Colonels totaled 43 points for the program's best ever finish at the conference meet.

Nicholls was led by a school record performance from sophomore sprinterSamantha Calhoun in the 100 m dash and a school record finish from the 4x100 m squad.

The Colonels bettered their previous school record point total of 23, set in 2009 when Nicholls placed a then-school record 11th out of twelve teams at the conference meet. With their 43 points, Nicholls nearly doubled the best finish in school history. In total, Nicholls posted three new school records and recorded multiple individual champions for the first time in school history.

The Colonels began the day with a total of 30 points thanks to individual championships by Leslie Bourgeoisin the javelin and Kadi Whisnant in the 3K steeplechase, as well as fourth place finishes by freshman javelin thrower Aja Scott and junior 10 K runner Lauren Jones, netting five points each.

"It's nice to have had the performances that did this week," head coach Scott Williamson said. "What Leslie and Kadi did earlier was great to see. You don't see very many three-time conference champs like Leslie and Kadi continued to really dominate the steeple. Sam had three great performances today. Anytime you can set a school record in the 100 m and still run two more great legs in the relays in one day is really impressive."

Nicholls got Sunday's scoring underway thanks to a fourth place finish in the 4x100 m relay. Tiffany Nall,Naomi GreenAshley Carpenter and Samantha Calhoun clocked in at 46.15, setting a new school record in the event. The Colonel quartet netted five points and narrowly missed out on all-conference honors, but their school record time vaulted Nicholls past its previous school record points total.

The 4x100 m relay was followed by the 1500 m run, and freshman Brea Goodman came through with a 4:51.27 time to claim eighth place and add another point to the Colonel total.

Calhoun followed in her second outing of the day, clocking in at 11.80 in the 100 m dash to place sixth and add three more points to the Nicholls total and claim her second school record of the day.

Two days after turning in a school record in the 10 K, Lauren Jones returned in the 5K. The Centerville, Iowa native clocked in at 17:51.77 to take sixth and add three more points to the Colonel cause.

Calhoun returned in the final event of the evening and led the Nicholls 4x400 m relay team to an eight place finish to add one more point to the Nicholls cause to bring their total to 43.

Nicholls will now set its sights on the first round of the NCAA Championships. The Colonels' best chances for sending participants to the national postseason rest with Bourgeois and Whisnant. Bourgeois began the week ranked eighth in the region in the javelin and Whisnant ranked 49th in the steeple. Nicholls will have to wait to see how marks and times come in from around the country before officially finding out whether or not Bourgeois and Whisnant qualify for the NCAA postseason. The first round for schools in the east region begins May 28 at North Carolina A&T in Greensboro, N.C.
