Men Sixth, Women 11th at Cross Country Regionals

WACO, Texas -- LSU's men's and women's cross country teams wrapped up the 2004 season Saturday finishing sixth and 11th, respectively, at the NCAA South Central Regional Championships.

Arkansas won the men's team title with 34 points. They were followed by Texas (51), Rice (65), Houston (148) and Stephen F. Austin (149). The Tigers finished with 168 points.

"The men performed well today," said LSU cross country coach Mark Elliott. "They ran as well as they could. When you leave the meet happy with your performances that's all you can ask. The teams that finished ahead of us were just better today."

Senior Jimmy Wiggins was the Tigers' top finisher for the fourth time this season. He crossed the line in 31:27 to finish 27th overall. Junior Patrick Gavin was on his heels, placing 28th with a time of 31:28.

Just off Gavin's pace were senior Sam Mwape and sophomore Drew Haro who finished 32nd and 33rd, respectively, with times of 31:34 and 31:37. Sophomore James Presley rounded out the list of scorers for LSU finishing the race in 32:23.

On the women's side, SMU took home the team crown with 50 points. Arkansas (61) and Baylor (81) rounded out the top three. The Lady Tigers finished with 280 points as five of their seven runners posted PRs.

Senior Katie Denton once again paced the LSU squad. She finished 42nd with a time of 22:11. She was followed by senior Ruth Nanyinza, who clocked 22:25 to place 52nd.

Junior Michelle Hymel (22:42) and sophomores Erin Vandivort (22:55) and Jennifer Radecker (23:03) completed the list of scorers for the Lady Tigers.
