Shallow Earns 10th Place Finish at NCAA Indoor

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark.  Southeastern Louisiana’s Adonson Shallow finished 10th in the weight throw competition at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships Saturday.  He was the first male student-athlete in program history to compete at indoor nationals.

Shallow’s first attempt landed at 64 feet, 7.75 inches (19.70 meters), putting him in 11th place after the initial rotation. He fouled on his second try, but on the third attempt, he launched a toss of 67 feet, 3.5 inches (20.51 meters), the second best throw of his career.

He was just two inches short of a spot in the top nine, which means a trip to the event finals and three additional throws.

LSU’s Walter Henning took home the event title with an effort of 77 feet, 3.75 inches (23.56 meters).

“It was a great experience for Adonson and a great opportunity to represent Southeastern among the elite in track and field,” head coach Sean Brady said. “He represented us well and I’m very proud of his performance.”

Shallow came into the meet ranked 12th in the country, having launched the apparatus 68 feet, 11.75 inches (21.02 meters) at the Southland Conference championship, giving him the meet title, along with new school and league records.

“This takes us into the outdoor season with some confidence,” assistant coach Brian Mondschein said. “That was one of the positives.  We’re expecting even bigger things outdoors in the discus and hammer.”

Shallow already holds the Southeastern record in hammer throw, with a mark of 211 feet, 6 inches (64.46 meters) at last year’s LSU Alumni Gold meet. He’s second on the school’s all-time discus list, hurling one 193 feet, 1 inch (58.86 meters) at the NCAA Mideast Regionals.

While Shallow competed for a national championship indoors, his teammates were outdoors at the McNeese Cowboy Relays. The men placed second and the women took fifth. They’ll be reunited for the Jim Mize Invitational, hosted by Louisiana Tech, on March 20.
