2018 Senior Sendoff: Jayson Davis (Opelika)

Athlete Name: Jayson Davis

School: Opelika High School

What was your most memorable meet and why? 2018 AHSAA State in Gulf Shores, i am the first pole vaulter in the history of opelika track & field to win state in this event. With this being our first year having this event and for me to be able to bring home a gold medal in this event was huge for me, my community, my team, and my family was huge.

Where did you face your biggest competition? AHSAA State meet 2018

Out of all of your high school accomplishments, which stands out the most and why? Winning state stands out the most because, when we finally got pole vault here at opelika I was a little afraid because of my fear of heights. But pole vault was something I really wanted to do. So I put my fear aside, and gave it a shot. And the rest is history. While everyone doubted me, I continued to believe in myself and my abilities and continued to put my trust in God who leads me and guides me, and through God all things are possible.

If you could do it all over again, what would you change about your running career in high school? I would have worked harder on and off the track to help my team achieve the goals we set at the beginning of the year.

What were the most difficult obstacles you had to overcome during your HS Track career? My biggest obstacle was getting over my fear of heights and knowing that I would make mistakes, and be willing to push myself to greatness.

What will you miss the most? I would miss the bond that I have with my teammates. All the laughing and fun we had. Every year on coach johnson's birthday the boys team would try to jump him for his birthday. We would have so much fun running around, wrestling and playing with everyone especially with the coach johnson.

Do you have any advice for younger athletes? Never give up on your dreams, anything that you want you can make it happen.

What are your post-highschool or college plans? I plan to continue my education while still being able to compete in track and field.

Who would you like to say thank you to? I would like to say thanks to my pole vault coach, coach wilder, and also coach johnson for believing in me and giving me the opportunity to succeed.
