LSU's Trindon Holliday

INDIANAPOLIS – LSU sophomore Trindon Holliday followed his runner-up finish in the 100 meters at the NCAA Outdoor Championships two weeks ago by taking second place in the event at the 2007 USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Friday.

Holliday crossed the finish line a split-second ahead of reigning NCAA champion Walter Dix of Florida State with a time of 10.07 seconds that was run into a slight headwind.

The Zachary, La., native advanced to the final after winning his semifinal heat earlier in the evening with a time of 10.22 at Carroll Stadium. Tyson Gay successfully defended his U.S. title in the event after breaking the meet record with a world-leading time of 9.84 in the final.

“For Trindon to come to his first major championship like this and perform the way he has is really impressive,” said LSU head coach Dennis Shaver. “He’s done a great job of representing LSU once again. He had the opportunity to compete against guys who are more experienced and have been in the Olympics, and I’m impressed by how he’s handled everything this week.”

LSU great Walter Davis earned a fourth-place finish in the long jump with a mark of 27 feet, ½ inches, while reigning Olympic silver medalist John Moffitt finished eighth in the event with a leap of 25-11 ½. Davis will look to defend his U.S. triple jump title during Sunday’s competition.

Also competing in the field events was former LSU national champion Russ Buller, who cleared a height of 18-0 ½ to finish eighth in the pole vault. The Lady Tigers had two former standouts competing in the finals of the 100-meter dash as Stephanie Durst finished seventh and Muna Lee placed eighth with matching times of 11.27.

In addition, Derrick Brew qualified for Saturday’s final of the 400-meter dash with the fifth-fastest time of the semifinal round at 45.02, while hurdler Lolo Jones advanced to the semifinal of the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 12.92 in the first round of qualifying.

“LSU was well-represented once again today at the USA Championships by our current and former athletes,” Shaver said. “We saw some outstanding individual performances, and it just shows the quality of program that we have built. I’m sure it’ll be just as exciting for our athletes competing over the next two days.”
