MOBILE, Ala. – The ULM men's cross country team finished third and the women fifth at the 40th annual Azalea City CC Classic on Friday evening at the Mobile County Fairgrounds.
For the second consecutive meet, sophomore Dusan Makevic paced the men with a third-place time of 25:02.03 in the 8K race. The reigning Sun Belt Conference Co-Runner of the Week winner was followed by sophomore Vinnie Van Puyvelde who notched a top-10 time of 25:45.38.
The Warhawks garnered a couple more top-20 finishes as senior Hillary Kirwa stopped the clock at 26:09.38 to place 14th and freshman James Turner registered a 26:14.01 time to finish 16th.
It was the first competition of the season for the women who were guided by freshman Kristin Cave's 24:07.78 time for a top-25 result. She was immediately followed by junior Rebecca Dark who tallied a 24:21.51 mark in the 6K race. Freshman Josie Wood also came across in the top-30 with a score of 25:07.77.
“It was a tough race for both the men and women. Kristin ran really well on the women's side. The women can definitely finish a lot higher in conference than in years past,” said cross country coach Karoly Varga. “We came into this meet after a really hard week of training. I was happy with some individual performances, but we have some work to do until conference.”
ULM will be back in action next Saturday when it heads to Ruston, La., for The Mook 5 competition.
