Warhawks Soar During Busy Weekend

MONROE, La. – The ULM track & field program came up big during a busy weekend that saw it compete at four different meets including the Mt. SAC Relays, Long Beach Invitational, Southeastern Lion Invitational and UCA Open.

 

Sophomore Dusan Makevic and junior Teona Glave represented the Warhawks in California. They started in Walnut, Calif., on Friday at the Mt. SAC Relays. Makevic posted a 3:52.48 in the 1500m and Glave clocked in at 2:16.87 in the 800m.

 

The duo then had a huge day in Norwalk, Calif., on Saturday at the Long Beach Invitational. Makevic edged out his time from the day before with a 3:52.33 result in the 1500m to take 11th out of 113 runners. Later that day, Makevic tallied a top-five time of 14:35.50 in the 5000m which broke his personal-record by over 10 seconds and is the second-fastest time in school history.

 

Glave shined with a 2:13.99 time in the 800m. It marked a season-best and the second fastest time in her career. She finished 51st out of 140 competitors.

 

At the SLU Invitational in Hammond, La., on Friday, the Warhawks garnered a pair of huge outings in the javelin. Freshman Mi’Ca Lowe was crowned champion on the women’s side with a personal-record throw of 46.17m. It crushed her previous best of 44.05m. For the men, sophomore Joey Womack registered a personal-record of 61.18m to take second-place and beat out his previous best of 59.96m. Sophomore Blaine Armstrong took fourth with a 53.59m hurl.

 

Freshman Alexis Gordon notched a top-five throw in the discus at 42.97m and top-10 in the shot put at 11.50m. Freshman Jevaughn Shaw fired a fourth-place throw in the men’s discus at 51.08m.

 

On Saturday at the UCA Open in Conway, Ark., senior Martin Solomon was runner-up in the 110m hurdles with a time of 14.90. Junior Isaac Grieder took fourth in the event with a personal-record 15.29. Solomon also registered a season-best of 53.07 in the 400m hurdles, good for fourth-place.

 

The 4x100 men’s relay team upped its season-best time to 40.72. It was ran by Grieder, freshman Jeremy Harden, and sophomores Mark Demus and Nigel Cribbs. Harden also posted a season-best time of 21.87 in the 200m to finish sixth.

 

Freshman Dominique Cheffin led the way in the 800m with a personal-record and top-20 time of 2:00.05.

 

In jumps, sophomore Corey Wesley grabbed third in the long jump with a 6.97m leap. Grieder tallied a personal-record 6.79m to place seventh.

 

For the women, sophomore Ariel Cain registered a personal-record of 25.24 in the 200m and sophomore Victoria Bowie set a personal-record of 59.40 in the 400m, both placing in the top-10. Cain also posted a personal-record in the 100m hurdles with a top-five score of 14.92.

 

Freshman Adriunna Brown had a big outing as she was runner-up in the long jump with a score of 5.79m, a season-best. She also clocked in a personal-record in the 400m hurdles with a top-five time of 1:04.62.

 

A couple more personal-records fell as freshman Brittany Garrison took eighth at 2:18.68 in the 800m and sophomore Rebecca Dark was top-10 with a 4:52.58 time in the 1500m.

 

In the pole vault, freshman Brenda Czermak etched a season-best of 3.36m to place sixth. Junior Colleen Butler matched her personal-record at 3.21m to take seventh.

 

The Warhawks will unite as one next weekend when they travel to Natchitoches, La., for the Northwestern Invite.
