Clerc's Corner - Part 5

Our new segment, "Clerc's Corner, written by Louisiana native, Clerc Koenck Simpson, will be a weekly blog posted every Thursday, talking about different aspects of competitive high school, college, and post collegiate running. The purpose of these articles are to highlight the journey that athletes take coming from small programs in Louisiana, facing adversity, struggles and defeat to eventually becoming great runners. Simpson, originally from Pickering, Louisiana, is a national-class athlete with numerous titles and and championships under her belt. Currently she is a Brooks Elite Athlete and trains in Colorado Springs, aiming for 2016. With the addition of Clerc's blog, we hope to inspire and encourage young runners from across the state to realize their own potential and to continue to "stride" for greatness.

Achieving and Believing

Today marks 3 weeks since surgery and I am happy to say things are progressing very well. I was able to do a light workout Tuesday and am feeling better than ever with a new hyper-sense of gratitude to train and compete. First of all, I attest this to the magical hands of my doctors and to my coach for easing me back in and keeping me under control. These past few weeks have also made me more grateful than ever for my teammates. They make me a better athlete and a better person day in and day out. Next, I attest this to hard work over the fall and winter with my coach both mentally and physically. This fall I read that when we become tense and stressed, it hinders our ability to heal quickly. We waste energy on these negative thoughts and emotions, instead of allowing that energy to be used for recovery. I try to focus on the positives that can come from this down time, think about the races to come or a recent good race or workout. All these things can get you through tough times.

Over the next week, my coach and I will plan the outdoor season. This leads me to my next point and a great exercise to try. I am going to do this over the next week. Pick a goal for yourself that you are 100% sure you can attain. Write it down. Then pick a goal you are 90% sure you can attain. Write that down. Work your way down to a goal that you are 50% sure can attain and 50% sure you cannot attain. Now this can either be a pretty frightening point in the exercise or you might become excited. The final step is to write down a goal that you are 40% sure you can accomplish and 60% sure you cannot. This is your goal. At this point you are all in. No excuses. No alternative plans. You will do everything you need to do to be successful and the fear that lingers will diminish, because fear is not an option. Excitement and the freedom to pursue something that most people are too paralyzed to set out to accomplish is exhilarating and liberating. What is the worst thing that can happen? You achieve something you were 70% sure you could attain and 30% you could not? You still achieved a much higher goal than you originally thought you possible.

I want to ask y’all to email some question over that you may have specifically on training and racing and I will answer them over the next few weeks. I am sure a lot of people have similar questions and you can help each other. If you want to keep it anonymous just let me know in the email. I am really excited to hear from each you!

Louisiana, Let’s do this.
