Nicholls Women's Track Preps For Samford Invitational

THIBODAUX, La. – The Nicholls State University women's track and field team continues its march through the indoor regular season on Friday, taking part in the Samford Invitational in Birmingham.

The two-day meet begins Friday at 9:30 a.m. with the men's and women's weight throw competitions, followed by the start of the heptathlon and pentathlon events. The day will conclude with the prelims and finals for the 200-meter dash and 5000-meter run. Saturday's events begin with the conclusion of the multi's at 9 a.m., with the majority of the running events taking place at the same time with the 60-meter hurdles.

Samford is hosting their meet at the Birmingham CrossPlex, a facility the Colonels are very familiar with as they started the season there in December and will make their way back at the end of this month for the Southland Conference Championships.

Nicholls got some outstanding performances last week at the second McNeese indoor event of the year, led by Terrian Gauff's breakout performance in the 400-meter which earned the sophomore weekly league honors. Gauff set a new facility record and school record time of 56.25 seconds. The mark is currently third in the Southland this year, as she followed that up with a second place finish as a part of the 4x400-meter relay team that day as well.

Ashley Wheeler continued to impress, as she took home gold in the 55-meter hurdles and finished second in the women's triple jump. Wheeler's clearing of 36 feet, 5.75 inches in Lake Charles is the second best mark in the event all-time at Nicholls and 11th in the league this year.

The Colonels still hold a handful of high marks among the league leaders, with Gauff third in the 400 meters and Kryshell Rolle third in the 60-meter hurdles. Tessni Carruthersstill holds the fifth-fastest time in the 3000 meters, while Jackie White is ninth in the mile and Kierranika Duncan is tenth in the triple jump.

A recap and results from the meet will be posted here on geauxcolonels.com following the conclusion of that day's events
